What is the Yes or No Tarot?

Yes or no tarot is the oldest practical use of a deck, and the one most likely to be done badly. Plenty of sites just flip a coin and show you a picture. This one shows its working.

Each of the 78 cards in our deck carries a traditional lean: yes, no or maybe, based on its actual meaning. The Sun leans yes. The Ten of Swords leans no. The High Priestess leans maybe, because her whole message is that you do not have the full picture yet. On top of that lean the reading scores the way the card landed (upright or reversed), its suit, and its number or court rank, each with a reason you can read.

You also get a confidence score out of 100, so a weak yes and a strong yes do not look the same, plus traditional timing from the suit, and a plain section on what would change the answer. Because no honest tarot answer is fixed: it describes where things stand today.

How it works

The card is drawn from a seeded Fisher-Yates shuffle of all 78 cards, with a one in three chance of a reversal, and you choose which of 24 face-down cards to turn. Nothing about the verdict is random after that point.

Scoring: the card own lean is worth plus 2 for yes, 0 for maybe and minus 2 for no. Upright adds 1, reversed subtracts 1.5. Suits add Wands plus 1, Cups plus 0.5, Pentacles plus 0.5 and Swords minus 1. Numbers add their own weight, so Aces and Sixes help while Fives and Nines drag. A Major Arcana card adds no points but multiplies the whole subtotal by 1.3, because those cards describe bigger forces. Your strict or gentle setting then stretches or squeezes the score.

Bands: plus 3.4 and above is Yes, plus 1.2 to 3.4 is Leaning yes, minus 1.2 to plus 1.2 is Not yet clear, minus 3.4 to minus 1.2 is Leaning no, and below minus 3.4 is No. Confidence is the distance from zero divided by 4.6 and capped at 100. Every one of those numbers appears in your report.

How it connects to your star sign

The suit of your card sets the traditional timing, and the suit maps to an element and so to three star signs: Wands to the Fire signs, Cups to Water, Swords to Air and Pentacles to Earth. Numbered Minor cards narrow it further to one decan, a third of a single sign, which some readers read as an actual season to watch.

Common questions

Is yes or no tarot accurate?

Tarot is a symbolic tradition, not a forecasting tool, so we never claim accuracy about events. What this tool does promise is an honest method: the card is genuinely random, the scoring is traditional, and every step is shown so you can judge it yourself.

Which tarot cards mean yes?

Broadly, the bright and forward moving ones: The Sun, The Star, the Aces, the Threes, the Sixes, the Ten of Cups, the Wands in general. Our deck stores a yes, no or maybe lean for all 78 cards, and the report tells you which one your card carries and why.

What does a maybe answer mean?

Usually that a piece is missing: a decision you have not made, a conversation you have not had, or information you do not have yet. A maybe is not a failed reading. It is a prompt to go and find the missing piece.

How should I word a yes or no question?

Start with Will, Should, Is or Can, and ask about one thing only. "Should I accept the job offer?" works. "What should I do about work and my relationship?" does not, because there is no single yes or no inside it.

Can I ask again if I do not like the answer?

You can reshuffle, but the second answer tends to be noise. Better to read the "what could change the answer" section, do the one action it suggests, and ask again when something real has shifted.

What do the strict and gentle settings do?

They stretch or squeeze the final score. Strict multiplies it by 1.45, which pushes borderline readings out of the maybe band into a definite yes or no. Gentle multiplies by 0.7, which leaves more room for "not yet". Balanced leaves the score alone.
