What is the Vimshottari Dasha Timeline?
Vimshottari ("one hundred and twenty") is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. Life is divided into nine planetary periods (Mahadashas) that always come in the same order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17.
Where you start depends on your Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each Mahadasha is split into nine sub-periods (Antardashas, or bhuktis) in the same order, and those are split again into Pratyantar dashas.
Astrologers read the period lord through its place in your chart: the house it sits in, the houses it rules and its strength.
How it works
We find the Moon's sidereal longitude (Lahiri), its nakshatra and the fraction already travelled. That fraction of the first lord's years has "already passed" at birth; the rest is the balance.
Each Antardasha lasts (Mahadasha years × sub-lord years / 120); each Pratyantar lasts (Antardasha length × its lord's years / 120). Years are 365.25 days.
How it connects to your star sign
Each dasha lord rules one or two zodiac signs (Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra, and so on), so each period also colours life with the qualities of those signs. The report lists your Moon sign and the signs of the current lords.
