What is the Three Card Tarot Spread?
The three card spread is the most used layout in tarot, because three is the smallest number that tells a story. One card gives you a theme. Two give you a comparison. Three give you a beginning, a middle and an end.
You get a choice of three well established layouts. Past, present, future traces how a situation got here and where it is heading. Situation, action, outcome is the practical one: what is going on, what would help, and what tends to follow. Mind, body, spirit is a check in on yourself rather than on events.
The reading does not stop at three separate card meanings. It also reads the elemental dignities between neighbouring cards, an old Golden Dawn technique where touching cards strengthen or weaken each other depending on their elements. Fire and Air help each other, Water and Earth help each other, Fire and Water fight. That is often where the real insight sits.
How it works
All 78 cards are shuffled from a random seed with a Fisher-Yates shuffle, each card gets a one in three chance of being reversed, and the 24 you see are the top of that shuffled deck. Your first pick goes to the first position, your second to the second, your third to the third.
On top of the individual meanings the report works out: the suit and element balance, how many Major Arcana appeared, whether any numbers repeat, the direction the card numbers move in, the elemental dignity between each neighbouring pair, and a quintessence card, found by adding all three card numbers and reducing the total until it fits inside the Major Arcana. That quintessence acts as a quiet summary of the whole spread.
How it connects to your star sign
Each of your three cards carries a Golden Dawn correspondence: a planet or sign for Major Arcana, and a planet in a decan (a third of a sign) for numbered Minor cards. The report lists the signs your three cards point to, with the reason for each, so you can see whether one element or one sign dominates the spread.
