What is the Biorhythm Cycle Calculator?
Biorhythm theory says that from the day you are born, several cycles run at a fixed length and never change speed. The three original ones are the physical cycle (23 days), the emotional cycle (28 days) and the intellectual cycle (33 days). Each is drawn as a smooth wave. Above the middle line is the high half of the cycle, below it is the low half, and the moment a wave crosses the middle is called a critical day.
The idea was put together around 1900 by two researchers in Vienna, Wilhelm Fliess and Hermann Swoboda, and it became very popular in the 1970s when pocket calculators made the sums easy. Later writers added longer cycles: intuition (38 days), aesthetic (43 days), awareness (48 days) and spiritual (53 days). This calculator plots all seven.
Because the cycles are fixed, biorhythms are completely predictable, which is the one thing that makes them genuinely useful: you can plan with them. The report finds your critical days for the next month (flagging double crossings, when two cycles turn on the same day), your highest combined days, your lowest day, and the next peak of each cycle.
We should be straight with you about the evidence. When researchers have tested biorhythm theory against real accident rates, exam results and mood diaries, the cycles have not predicted anything better than chance. Your actual energy depends far more on sleep, stress, health, food and daylight. Use this as a planning lens and a prompt to notice your own rhythms, not a forecast.
How it works
First we count the exact number of days between your date of birth and the date you asked about. That number is also your "day of life" figure, shown in the subtitle. For each cycle we then compute the standard biorhythm sine: value = sin(2 x pi x days / period). A value of 1 is the peak, minus 1 is the trough, and 0 is the zero line. The report shows each value as a percentage along with the day number inside the cycle and whether the wave is currently rising or falling.
Critical days are found by stepping day by day through the next 30 days and recording every date where a cycle changes sign from the day before. The direction (turning up or turning down) comes from the sign of the new value. Best days are ranked by adding the three main cycle values together and excluding any critical day. Next peaks are found by solving for the next time each sine reaches 1.
Biorhythm compatibility compares two birth dates by taking the difference in days, then reducing it to an offset within each cycle period. An offset of zero means the two waves move exactly together, and an offset of half the period means they are exact opposites. The score shown is cos of that phase difference, rescaled so 100 per cent is perfectly in step and 0 per cent is perfectly opposed.
How it connects to your star sign
Biorhythms and astrology are separate systems, but they rhyme in a neat way. Each of your three main cycles matches one of the classical elements: the physical cycle suits the fire and earth signs that carry drive and stamina, the emotional cycle belongs to the water signs ruled by the Moon, and the intellectual cycle belongs to the air signs. Your report names your sun sign, says which of the three cycles its element suggests you will notice most, and adds Aries (ruled by Mars, the planet of physical energy) and Cancer (ruled by the Moon, which governs the 28 day emotional rhythm) with a reason for each.
