What is the Destiny (Expression) Number Calculator?

Your Destiny number, also called the Expression number, comes from every letter of your full birth name. Where your Life Path describes the road you walk, your Expression describes the tools you carry: natural talents, abilities and the way you tend to go about things.

This tool also reads the patterns inside your name. Karmic lessons are numbers that do not appear in your name at all, read as qualities you are here to build. Your hidden passion is the number that appears most often. The intensity table shows how often each number appears, and the planes of expression show how your letters spread across body, mind, emotion and intuition.

You can compare two systems. Pythagorean numerology gives A=1, B=2 and so on to I=9, then starts again at J=1. Chaldean numerology uses an older sound-based table with values 1 to 8.

How it works

In Pythagorean mode, each name is added up and reduced on its own, then the results are added and reduced again, keeping 11, 22 and 33. For example, ANNA = 1+5+5+1 = 12 -> 3. Accents are removed first (José becomes JOSE), and hyphens, apostrophes and spaces inside a name are ignored, so Mary-Jane is read as MARYJANE.

In Chaldean mode, the whole name is totalled and reduced, which is how that tradition is normally taught. Karmic lessons, hidden passion, intensity and planes always use the Pythagorean values, because those methods were built on that table.

How it connects to your star sign

Your Expression number has a traditional planet, which links it to a star sign: an Expression 3 to Jupiter and Sagittarius, an 8 to Saturn and Capricorn. If you add your birth date, the report also shows your sun sign and whether it shares a planet with your name number.

Common questions

Is the Destiny number the same as the Expression number?

Yes. Different books use different names: Destiny, Expression and sometimes Name number all mean the total of every letter in your full birth name.

Should I include my middle name?

Yes, if it is on your birth certificate. The tradition uses your full birth name. You can also try your everyday name to compare.

How are accents and hyphens handled?

Accents are removed (Zoë becomes ZOE), letters like ß and æ are spelled out (SS, AE), and hyphens and apostrophes are ignored. A hyphenated name such as Mary-Jane is treated as one name.

What are karmic lessons?

Karmic lessons are the numbers from 1 to 9 that do not appear in your name. Each one points to a quality you may need to develop consciously. Most names have one to three.

Pythagorean or Chaldean: which should I use?

Pythagorean is the most common system in the English-speaking world and is the default. Chaldean is older in style and some people find it resonates more. Try both and see which description fits you better.
